I recently wrote a letter to the Muskegon Chronicle. It was revised once by our teacher and I’m editing it . When it’s done I will post it, but the reason I bring this up is because I want you to know what the main focus is of our group now. Michigan recently passed an anti-bullying bill which states that every school district must have an anti-bullying policy. Michigan is still one of three states out of 50 of whom still do not have an anti-bullying law. We need it to stay that way until they revise the bill and make it better and more effective. The bill states that if the bully has a religious or moral conviction for bullying a person, that it is alright for them to do so. They are outlining what students can get away with. We think that they are mostly targeting Gays because of the religious aspect of it. We believe that no matter what your reason for bullying is, that it is wrong. A human being is a human being and if you do anything to hurt them physically and or emotionally that it is wrong and should be dealt with effectively, not just a slap on the wrist. This bill that they are revising now is not good, and we need them to vote NO on it so that they can take the time to put in a lot more detail. As of now, it is barely detailed and basically only states what you can get away with. We need to stop this bill from being passed, it needs to be voted NO on it. Passing this bill will be basically the same as not having one. Moral or immoral, bullying is bullying and if someone is getting hurt for ANY reason it’s wrong. Growing up you were taught that if you didn’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Just because you disagree with someone for being Gay or you don’t like them for being a different color or religion doesn’t give you grounds to bully them for it. They can not choose their own race, they will not choose a different religion just because you don’t like it, they will not change whom they like just because you think it’s wrong. Who are you to say what is right and what is wrong? If somebody is going to get hurt because of your choices, you are worse than anything that you think they did or are is. This is why bullying needs to be stopped. This is why we need to say NO on the bill. Bullying is bullying and ALL of it is WRONG!
